During the top match of the 2. Bundesliga between Hertha BSC and the Hamburger SV at the Berlin Olympiastadion, there were significant disturbances in the home team's fan block on Saturday evening. Shortly after the game started, a physical altercation broke out in the East Stand area between fans and officers from the Berlin police.
According to reports, the conflict started when officers tried to arrest one person in the block. Parts of the supporters then showed solidarity, leading the police to use batons and 'Reizgas' (irritant gas). Hertha BSC fans later complained about the police action being disproportionate and reported several injuries among their ranks.
As a reaction to what happened, the 'Ultras' stopped their organized support and drumming and removed their banner fences. A large part of the active fan scene left the stadium during the first half. The visiting supporters of Hamburger SV also temporarily joined the 'Stimmungsboykott' (atmosphere boycott) to show their solidarity. The club Hertha BSC confirmed the incident and announced that they would look into the events.
