The CDU won the state election in Rheinland-Pfalz. Now they invite the SPD to first talks. These talks are called exploratory talks. They happen on Thursday afternoon. Gordon Schnieder leads the CDU group. He will likely be the new Minister President. Alexander Schweitzer leads the SPD group. He is still the Minister President.
The CDU got 31 percent in the election. The SPD got only 25.9 percent. This is their worst result in this state. The AfD became the third strongest force. But nobody wants to work with the AfD. A government with the Greens is not enough. So a Grand Coalition is almost sure.
CDU and SPD have many seats together. They have a two-thirds majority in the state parliament. With this, they can even change the constitution. The CDU has 39 seats. The SPD has 32 seats. Together this is 71 of 105 seats. A Grand Coalition never existed there before. On Thursday they want to talk about important topics.
