The Paralympic Winter Games 2026 have opened. The ceremony took place in an old theater in Verona. Many people criticize the ceremony. Only few athletes could enter the stadium. Many countries boycotted the ceremony because of this. This means: They did not come to the ceremony.
On Saturday there was the first race in snow sports. Veronika Aigner from Austria won gold. She was the fastest in the downhill race. Veronika Aigner cannot see well. So she skis with an assistant. This assistant is called a guide. Her guide is Lilly Sammer. Lilly Sammer is only 16 years old. She helps Veronika Aigner at high speed.
Her brother Johannes Aigner was also successful. He also took part in the downhill race. The races happen in Cortina d'Ampezzo. The snow there is very fast. Austria hopes for more medals. The Games last until March 15.
