A humpback whale is stuck near the coast of Niendorf. The animal lies on a sand bank in shallow water. People try to save the animal since Monday. All attempts did not work so far. The water is too shallow for the big animal there.
A new rescue action starts on Thursday. Experts use two big excavators for this. One excavator can float on the water. The excavators dig a deep channel in the sand. This channel is 50 meters long. The whale should swim into deeper water through the ditch.
Experts check the whale regularly. A diver looked closely at the animal. The whale is about 12 to 15 meters long. It weighs about 15 tons. The animal still breathes and moves its head. The experts hope very much for the success of the excavators.
