The company Biontech closes many sites. It affects the cities Idar-Oberstein, Marburg and Tuebingen. A site in Singapore closes too. Up to 1,860 people lose their job. Biontech makes no more corona vaccines there. The partner Pfizer does this alone now. Biontech lost much money lately. The company wants to save 500 million Euro now. The money goes into research against cancer. The sites close until the year 2027. The mayor of Tuebingen thinks this is bad. He wants solutions for the workers.
The company Novartis also closes a site. It stands in the city Wehr. 220 people work there. They make pills and capsules. The site is not modern enough anymore. It closes until the end of 2028. Novartis builds a new site in Halle instead. There, people make medicine against cancer. Novartis pays 35 million Euro for this. 2,600 people work for Novartis in Germany.
The union IG BCE is angry at Biontech. It says: The company thinks only of money. The workers feel alone. But Biontech wants new drugs against cancer until 2030. The founders of Biontech leave too. Ugur Sahin and Oezlem Tuereci found a new company. They want to do new research there.
