Austria has a new rule. It is soon forbidden to throw cigarette stubs on playgrounds. The health committee in the National Council decided this. The law starts on August 20. There will be signs at all playgrounds.
People must pay if they break this rule. A fine can cost 500 Euro. Repeat offenders pay up to 2,000 Euro. Almost all parties voted for the new law. Only one party was against it.
The goal is to protect children. Many small children get sick from nicotine. Nicotine is a poison in the cigarette. Smoking on playgrounds is already forbidden in Vienna. Now stricter rules apply to all of Austria.
