The parliament in Hungary changes the laws. A leader works for a shorter time now. A leader stays for 2 terms at most. That is 8 years in total. 135 members of parliament vote for it. 50 members vote against it. 6 people do not vote. This new rule is a promise by Péter Magyar. He is the new leader of Hungary. He is in the TISZA party. He wants to limit power in the country. He can only rule for 8 years too.
The new rule hits Viktor Orbán hard. He was the leader for 20 years before. His party is called Fidesz. They think the new law is bad. They call it the Orbán law. They say: The law only hurts Viktor Orbán. He must not rule again. The rule counts for the past time too. Orbán used his time already.
In the past, many had a fight about Hungary. The European Union had worries. They said: Hungary has too little democracy. Democracy means: The people choose the government. Because of that, the EU blocks money for Hungary. Orbán had his own opinion about the war in Ukraine. He was on the side of Russia often. Many other countries in Europe did not like that. With the new law, the new government shows: Hungary follows the rules of democracy now.
