There is a new rule. It starts on July 1. Small packages from abroad cost more now. You pay a tax on goods under 150 Euro. This tax is 3 Euro for each type of good.
This rule is for almost all packages to the EU. This means packages from China, India or the USA. Packages from Great Britain cost more too. The EU wants to help local shops.
The tax is not for the whole package. It is for each type of good in the package. Does a package have a shirt and a case for a phone? Then the buyer pays 3 Euro 2 times. That is 6 Euro in total.
The number of small packages grows fast. In 2024, 12 million packages arrived every day. Most of them come from China. The EU wants to stop this many packages.
The new tax is a temporary solution until 2028. After that, all goods cost extra from the first Euro. Experts in Austria like this step. They hope for less trash from free returns.
