Only sick adults get this help. The illness must be very bad. The person will die soon. The person has very strong pain.
The person chooses this on their own. A team of doctors checks the wish. The person has 2 days to think. Then a doctor gives the drug.
Often the person takes the drug alone. This is called 'assistierten Suizid'. If the person is too weak, a doctor helps. This is called 'Sterbe-Hilfe'.
In the past, this was against the law. Emmanuel Macron wanted the new law. Many people in France like the law. The church does not like the law.
The law is only for people in France. People with mental illness do not get help. The 'Verfassungs-Rat' checks the law one more time.
