There is very little water in the Danube right now. This is called low water. A cruise ship got stuck in Bulgaria because of this. The ship is named Viking Ullur. It sails under the flag of Switzerland.
There were 238 people on board. 186 of them were passengers. The border police rescued all people with boats. No one got hurt. The reason for the accident was bad sight and low water.
There are big problems in Austria too. The heat makes the water in the Danube very warm. Many fish die in Upper Austria and Lower Austria. Especially young fish die in the heat. The water has 30 degrees in some places.
When the water is warm, there is too little oxygen. Many fish cannot breathe then. Fishermen try to save the animals. They bring big fish to deeper water. A small river named Mattig is already completely dry.
The water levels are very low in many places. A gauge shows how high the water stands. The value dropped to 109 centimeters in Kienstock. This is a new record. It must rain soon so the situation gets better.
