More old people die in bike accidents. Last year there were 65 deadly accidents. 40 of these people were over 65 years old. This is the majority of the dead people.
The group VCÖ checks these numbers. The data comes from Statistik Austria. There are many more seniors today than before. In Austria live almost 2 million people over 65 years. By the year 2035 there are even more.
The VCÖ now wants quick help. It wants to build more paths for bikes. This is good for busy roads. In cities cars should drive 30 instead of 50. This makes bike riding safer for seniors.
The number is much higher than last year. There are 23 more dead seniors than before. Expert Klara Maria Schenk says: Austria needs to do more. The road system must be better for old people.
