On Svalbard live many reindeer. Experts found 13 dead animals. They found 11 females and 2 males. The animals died in 2 valleys. These valleys are near the North Pole.
The dying in summer is very strange. Usually reindeer die in winter. Then mostly very young or very old animals die. The found animals were healthy and strong. They were in their best age.
Researchers do not know why the animals died. There is no clear guess yet. Also vets search for an answer. Sick animals die mostly when they are weak. These reindeer were very strong.
The authorities watch the situation closely. People must report dead animals at once. On Svalbard live 22000 reindeer in total. This is much more than humans live there. The island group belongs to Norway.
