A large military drill starts in Taiwan. More than 20.000 soldiers join the maneuver. Also 5.000 reservists help. They practice the defense of the island against China. China sees Taiwan as its own land.
The soldiers practice fighting with tanks and rockets. Drones also play an important role. The army uses knowledge from wars in other lands. An important goal is the group of islands Penghu. They lie very close to China. Experts call them the first line of defense.
Taiwan also tests the mobile internet. Next week the internet becomes slower on purpose. The government wants to practice for an emergency. Important calls and text messages still work. The army wants to test communication in a crisis.
A big problem is also espionage. China often tries to bribe soldiers from Taiwan. These soldiers then reveal secret plans. Some soldiers get much money for this. Therefore new soldiers now get training against communism again.
