The UN makes a vote on Friday. 164 countries want a new map. Only the USA vote against the plan. 6 countries do not vote.
The new map has the name Equal Earth. That means equal earth in English. It shows all land in the true size. On old maps, Africa looks too small. In truth, Africa is 14 times as big as Greenland.
The old map has the name Mercator map. A man named Gerardus Mercator makes it over 450 years ago. It helps ships on the sea. But it makes northern lands too big. That makes a false view of the world.
Robert Dussey is the foreign minister of Togo. He makes the idea for the new map. He says: Maps shape our mind. A wrong map gives wrong ideas. The new map brings more fairness.
The choice of the UN is no law. But schools and firms shall use the new map now. So kids learn the true size of lands.
