A court in Mombasa makes a ruling. The cult leader Paul Mackenzie is guilty of murder. He and his helpers killed 191 people. Almost all victims were children. Mackenzie was a taxi driver before.
He started a church in the year 2003. He called himself a pastor. He told his followers: You must fast. Then you meet Jesus. The people had to fast until they die. This happened in the Shakahola forest.
The police found many graves there in the year 2023. More than 400 bodies were found in total. Many children died by hunger. Some children were also choked or beaten. Mackenzie banned medicine and school too.
The judge Diana Kavedza Mochache spoke the ruling. Mackenzie and 29 other persons are guilty. They deny the crimes. There are more court trials against them. These trials are about terrorism for example.
