A group named WWF writes a report. The report has the name Living Planet Report. The report shows bad news for nature. The number of wild animals drops a lot. Since the year 1970 the numbers drop by 73 percent.
The situation in fresh water is very bad. In rivers and lakes are 85 percent fewer animals. On land the number drops by 69 percent. In the seas the drop is 59 percent. Humans cause this change.
Humans need more space for food. Forests are cut down for farming. Also energy and money systems harm nature. Much money goes to projects that harm nature. Only a little money goes to nature protection.
The loss of nature is also bad for humans. We need biodiversity to live. It gives us clean air and water. Also our food and medicine come from nature. Without variety we lack the basis for life.
The report also brings good news. Targeted help saves some animal kinds. The number of tigers goes up again. Also the green sea turtle is in less danger. Rules for fishers help tuna in the seas.
The expert Kathrin Samson sees hope. The downward trend can stop. Politics and business must protect nature better. If all work together, animal numbers can grow again. Protection programs alone are not enough.
