A big crime in the internet
The crypto exchange Binance had a bad attack. Hackers stole digital money worth 6.3 billion dollars. This happened in just 20 minutes.
This is the biggest crypto crime ever. Crypto money is digital money in the internet. Known examples are Bitcoin or Ether.
A hacked laptop from a worker was the cause. The worker is an engineer for the tech. The hackers got access to the systems this way.
Who are the doers?
Experts think: The hackers come from North Korea. The group is named Trader-Traitor. It belongs to the known Lazarus group.
North Korea uses the stolen money for weapons. The country has many sanctions. Sanctions are punishments from other countries.
The hackers prepared the attack long. They tested the theft 36 hours before. Then they took the money away very fast.
What happens to the money?
Binance stopped all payouts first. The company wants to pay back the loss for users. The money of the clients must be safe.
Other firms helped Binance fast. They froze a part of the money. So the thieves cannot use it.
The prices for Bitcoin fell after the crime. Many investors are very nervous now. In Austria the platform Bit-Panda has no harm.
