The Mars rover Perseverance has a new record. It drives on the planet Mars. The rover belongs to the USA space agency NASA. Since the year 2021 it drives there. Now it drives 45 point 22 kilometers. This is the longest track for a vehicle in space.
Before, the rover Opportunity holds the record. It drives 45 point 16 kilometers. Perseverance beats this record now. The vehicle should only drive 20 kilometers. It achieves much more than thought. The rover has 6 wheels and explores the planet.
The vehicle is very expensive. The build costs 2 point 5 billion dollar. Experts work 8 years on it. Perseverance shall drive much longer. The NASA plans the mission until the end of 2028. Until then it shall discover much more.
