The administration of US President Donald Trump has made personnel decisions for the future of the Gaza Strip. As the White House announced, a body named the 'Friedensrat' (Peace Council) was established to support the implementation of a peace plan for the region. Among the most prominent members is the former British Prime Minister Tony Blair.
Blair is set to take on a central role in this body for coordinating the transition. The goal is to organize the government leadership and reconstruction in the Gaza Strip after the active fighting ends. In addition to Blair, Jared Kushner, the US President's son-in-law, was also appointed to the council. Kushner was significantly involved in diplomatic initiatives in the Middle East during Trump's first term.
Blair's appointment is seen by observers as an attempt to integrate international expertise and diplomatic experience into the US-led process. Blair previously served as the Special Envoy of the Quartet on the Middle East. The task of the new council is to intensify cooperation with regional partners and establish a stable order in the Gaza Strip to enable long-term peace.
