After the recent heavy missile attacks on the Ukrainian energy infrastructure, the Kyiv city administration reports progress in restoring basic services. Mayor Vitali Klitschko announced that the district heating supply could be resumed for a significant portion of the apartment blocks in the city area. Technicians are working intensively to close the remaining gaps in the heating network that were caused by the targeted shelling.
However, the energy supply situation remains tense. Although heating systems are working again in many homes, planned and unplanned power outages continue to occur to stabilize the national power grid. The attacks had previously plunged large parts of the capital, as well as other regions of Ukraine, into darkness and cold. The focus of the repair measures is not only on the heat supply but also on securing the water supply and stabilizing the power stations.
Internationally, the strategy of attacking civilian infrastructure in winter is being sharply criticized. In parallel with the repairs, the Ukrainian government is seeking additional air defense systems and technical assistance from abroad to minimize future damage. Kyiv residents have been asked to continue saving energy to keep the burden on the partially unstable grid as low as possible.
