Australia has started implementing a law regulating social networks that is historically unprecedented. According to this law, platforms like Instagram, Facebook, and TikTok must block access for children and young people under the age of 16. This action will lead to the deactivation of an estimated 4.7 million user accounts. The Australian government justifies this step by stating the need to protect the mental health of young people and prevent online dangers.
At the same time, the video platform TikTok has announced it will significantly strengthen its age verification technologies within the European Union. By using improved AI systems and 'biometric' estimation methods, the company aims to ensure that minors cannot access content that is unsuitable for their age group. While Australia is pursuing a strict ban, TikTok in Europe is focusing on technical verification to comply with regulatory requirements from the EU Commission. The company is thus reacting to increasing political pressure regarding youth protection in the digital sphere.
