In a new escalation of transatlantic relations, US President Donald Trump has announced punitive tariffs against several European nations. According to information from the White House, Germany, Denmark, France, the United Kingdom, and Norway are particularly affected. Trump justified this step with the lack of cooperation from these nations regarding his efforts to bring the strategically important island of Greenland under stronger US influence or even acquire it.
The announced tariffs, set at 25 percent, will be imposed on a variety of export goods. The US President described the attitude of the European partners as a lack of willingness to cooperate within the NATO. While Denmark and the autonomous Greenlandic government have repeatedly rejected purchase intentions in the past, Trump emphasizes the national security of the USA as the primary motive for his demands.
At the same time as these political tensions, the German Armed Forces (Bundeswehr) have started an exploratory mission in Greenland. A team of experts is to examine logistical and infrastructural conditions on site. Greenland is gaining massive geopolitical importance due to the melting of the polar ice, which is exposing raw materials and new shipping routes. In London and Berlin, Trump's threats were met with sharp criticism; politicians warned of a trade war and a destabilization of the defense alliance.
In addition to the Greenland conflict, Trump also intensified his rhetoric against Iran. In an interview, he sharply criticized the religious leader Ali Khamenei and emphasized the necessity of a hard line against Tehran to ensure stability in the Middle East.
