The reason for the police action was allegedly the suspicion of driving under the influence.
After the arrest, Spears was led away in handcuffs and taken to a police station. Documents from the responsible sheriff show that she was released from custody around 6:00 AM early Thursday morning. This was a temporary detention without bail or probation conditions being imposed.
A spokesperson for the singer described the incident as unfortunate in an initial statement and declared that Spears would cooperate with the authorities. The incident occurred just hours after Spears had obtained a restraining order against an alleged stalker by court order. An initial court date related to the current traffic offense has been set for May 4th at the Superior Court of Ventura County.
