The military confrontation between the USA, Israel, and Iran sharply increased on Tuesday. US President Donald Trump stated that it was 'too late' for talks with the Iranian leadership. The goal of the joint military operations is reportedly the dismantling of the Islamic Republic's power structures. According to reports, command centers of the Revolutionary Guards (Pasdaran) and buildings of the Guardian Council in Tehran were hit.
The Israeli air force also extended its attacks to Lebanon to destroy Hezbollah's infrastructure. Targets in the capital Beirut and in the south of the country came under fire, forcing tens of thousands of people to flee. The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) also confirmed damage to the nuclear facility in Natanz but emphasized that no increased radioactivity had been measured. In Iran itself, reports speak of hundreds of fatalities and numerous injuries.
In Germany, the situation caused political debates. Representatives of the SPD parliamentary group spoke of a potential breach of international law and warned against an uncontrolled escalation in the region. At the same time, observers are concerned about the economic consequences, as Qatar, an important gas supplier, is out of action due to blockades in the Persian Gulf. In Tehran and other cities, repression against political prisoners is also increasing, while the international community watches with concern the looming expansion of the conflict to other Gulf states.
