The military conflict in the Middle East has reached a new level of escalation. Reports indicate that Israeli forces carried out heavy airstrikes on targets in the Lebanese capital Beirut and on strategic facilities in Iran. Among the targets was reportedly an underground bunker complex linked to the Iranian leadership. The US Air Force also participated with attacks on positions of the Revolutionary Guards and military infrastructure in Iran, as a reaction to previous drone and missile attacks.
Given the precarious security situation, the German federal government has started the evacuation of German nationals from Saudi Arabia. Lufthansa is operating special flights from Riyadh to Frankfurt am Main in this context. Other international airlines, such as Etihad Airways, are also adjusting their flight schedules to the dynamic situation. Meanwhile, the Lufthansa Group is seeing clear economic effects due to airspace closures and the general instability in the region.
Internationally, the concern about a wider conflict is growing. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy drew parallels to the defense against Shahed drones and called for increased international cooperation on air defense systems. In the USA, the strategy of the administration under Donald Trump is being controversially discussed, while world market energy prices are reacting to the uncertainties. Despite the military tensions, the USA granted India temporary exemptions for the purchase of Russian oil to stabilize global energy markets. The humanitarian situation in the affected areas, especially in Lebanon and Iran, is considered critical. Diplomatic efforts for de-escalation have so far shown no measurable success.
