Laura Pirovano won the first of two World Cup downhill races at her home venue, Val di Fassa, on Friday. This success marks the first World Cup victory of her career for the 28-year-old Italian. Pirovano prevailed against the international elite in a technically demanding race on the 'La VolatA' slope.
Top athletes filled the leading ranks behind the first-time winner, with very small time gaps among the frontrunners. Her teammate Sofia Goggia also showed a solid performance but could not fully join the fight for the day's win. The conditions in Trentino remained stable despite mild temperatures, which allowed for a fair competition for those with early start numbers.
From an Austrian perspective, Cornelia Hütter finished as the best Austrian skier in fifth place. This earned her valuable points for the discipline standings. The downhill in Val di Fassa is considered an important benchmark for the season finale because the course includes both gliding sections and steep, winding parts. Another women's downhill will take place at the same location on Saturday.
