The release of documents in the case of the deceased sex offender Jeffrey Epstein is causing political tension in the USA. Several media reports suggest that the US Department of Justice deliberately withheld documents containing allegations against the sitting US President Donald Trump. Specifically, this concerns about 50 pages of FBI notes from interviews with a woman from 2019.
The woman involved stated that she was sexually abused by both Epstein and Trump when she was a minor in the 1980s. However, of the total of four interviews conducted with the FBI, only one was released, which relates exclusively to Epstein. The other three records, in which Trump was allegedly mentioned, are missing from the public files. Democratic representatives in Congress confirmed after reviewing the unredacted documents that the department had apparently not released interviews concerning serious accusations against the president.
The Department of Justice, led by Pam Bondi, rejected the criticism, stating that documents would only be withheld if they were confidential, duplicates, or could jeopardize ongoing investigations. For a short time, tens of thousands of already released files were also taken offline for re-examination. Critics accuse the government of wanting to protect influential people and undermine the transparency ordered by Congress. Donald Trump himself has always denied any wrongdoing and described the accusations as politically motivated.
