Bayer 04 Leverkusen won the catch-up game of the 17th Bundesliga matchday against Hamburger SV by a score of 1-0. In front of 57,000 spectators in the sold-out Volksparkstadion, Christian Kofane scored the decisive goal for the visitors in the 73rd minute. The match, which was originally scheduled for mid-January, had to be postponed at that time due to safety concerns about snow masses on the stadium roof.
In the first half, Leverkusen largely controlled the game but was not sharp enough in front of the goal. Martin Terrier missed the best chance, hitting only the crossbar with his shot in the 12th minute. Furthermore, a penalty kick, initially awarded to Leverkusen, was corrected after an intervention by the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) because the offense had taken place just outside the penalty area.
After the break, the encounter became more balanced. Hamburger SV had its first significant big chance through Nicolai Remberg in the 55th minute, which Leverkusen's goalkeeper Janis Blaswich was able to save. On the other side, the 'Werkself' remained patient. After a setup from Ibrahim Maza, the 19-year-old Kofane, who replaced the briefly injured Patrik Schick as the central striker, scored the winning goal with a powerful left-footed shot.
In a turbulent final phase, HSV pushed hard for the equalizer. Luka Vu ešković missed two high-quality opportunities in stoppage time, with one header hitting the woodwork again. With this success, Leverkusen solidifies its position in the upper third of the table, while HSV, as eleventh in the table, still needs points against relegation.
