Lewis Hamilton has repeated his wish to see a Formula 1 race take place in Africa before he ends his active career. The Briton, who will race for Ferrari starting in 2025, emphasized how important it is for the continent to return to the racing calendar. In his view, Formula 1 cannot continue to expand globally without taking Africa into account, as the continent has not hosted a Grand Prix since 1993.
In his statements, Hamilton took a critical tone regarding the colonial past and the sport's previous disregard for the African market. He declared that he feels committed to pushing this project forward. However, despite political efforts, especially from South Africa, the realization remains a challenge. The South African Sports Minister, Gayton McKenzie, recently admitted that a race in 2027 is not feasible because the Kyalami Grand Prix Circuit still needs to obtain the necessary FIA certification.
Besides South Africa, Rwanda is also showing interest in hosting a race. Hamilton stated that he has been assured by F1 CEO Stefano Domenicali that an Africa Grand Prix is a priority. The 41-year-old record world champion, who recently dismissed speculation about an early retirement, sees this endeavor as a key part of his legacy for the sport.
