Fewer people live in Germany. At the end of 2025, 83.5 million people lived here. That is 110,000 fewer people than the year before. The number grew for 14 years. Only in 2020 it was lower due to Corona.
There are 2 main reasons for this. First, more people die than children are born. This is a Geburten-Defizit. This number is 352,000. Second, fewer people move here from other countries.
The Wanderungs-Saldo dropped to 235,000 people. More people move here than leave. But this gain is small. It cannot fix the Geburten-Defizit. So the population is shrinking.
The situation in the federal states is different. In Berlin, Hamburg and Bremen, the number of people grew. In all other states it dropped. The drop was big in Thüringen and Sachsen-Anhalt. Nord-Rhein-West-Falen also lost people.
People in Germany are getting older. There are more people between 60 and 79 years. This is because of the Baby-Boomern. These are years with many births. The number of young people dropped.
