There were 5 new citizen initiatives in Austria. People signed for one week. But no initiative was a success. You need 100,000 votes for success.
Then the parliament talks about the topic. No initiative reached this goal. Most votes were for free birth control. Nearly 60,000 people voted for this.
Other topics were a holiday on Good Friday. More staff for the police was a topic. Some people wanted to start a voting duty. Another goal was electronic voting in parliament.
In the past there were fewer citizen initiatives. But almost all were successful. Since the year 2018 people can sign on the internet. This is much easier for people.
That is why there are many more initiatives now. But people do not sign as often. The success rate goes down clearly. In the year 2023 there were 19 citizen initiatives.
A reason for many requests is money. If you have success, you get money from the state back. This is called cost refund. Some people want to earn money with this.
