Austria has a dispute about military service. Now there is a new plan. Chancellor Christian Stocker wants a compromise model. He calls it the 6-plus-3 model.
This means: Young men do 6 months of basic military service. Then they do 3 months of training in the militia. The militia are soldiers. They have normal jobs every day. They only train sometimes for an emergency.
The party SPÖ likes the plan. They wanted a similar model before. The party NEOS wants a volunteer model instead. The parties talk about the details.
The Chancellor also wants to change the civil service. This service is for people who do not want to be soldiers. It shall last 12 months in the future. This creates fairness. There shall be a decision before summer.
If there is no decision, Stocker plans a vote. Then all citizens decide. The party FPÖ has its own plan. It supports an older model.
