Fewer babies are born in Germany. In 2025, women had 1.32 children on average. This is the lowest value since 1997. Back then, the number was almost as small.
The number of births falls since 2022. Last year, 654,241 children were born. This is a new low since the Second World War. The Statistische Bundes-Amt published these numbers now.
There are big differences between the federal states. In Niedersachsen, the Geburten-Rate is the highest. A woman has 1.38 children on average there. In Sachsen, the rate is the lowest with 1.16 children.
In Hamburg, there was a small exception. The Geburten-Rate rose slightly there. In all other states, the number of births fell. In the East of Germany, fewer children are born than in the West.
There is a reason for the low numbers. In the 90s, few children were born. These people are now of age to have children. Because this group is small, there are fewer parents.
The rate also falls for women without a German passport. They had 1.78 children on average in 2025. That is 3 percent less than the year before. For German women, the rate fell to 1.20 children.
