The National-Rat decides on two new school subjects. The new subjects are Media and Democracy. Another subject is Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence. The government agrees. Students learn important things in Media and Democracy. They learn to spot Fake-News. Fake-News are false stories on the internet. They learn how social media works. They also learn how our Democracy works.
The second subject is Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence. Children learn to code here. Data protection is a topic. Safety on the internet is a topic. The goal is knowledge for work. The goal is knowledge for daily life. Media gets 2 hours. Computer science gets 1 hour. These new hours take time. Some students have less Latin. Or they have less of another foreign language.
Schools can decide for themselves. Every school is free. A school can keep Latin. This is called School-Autonomy. Education Minister Christoph Wiederkehr likes this freedom. The opposition does not like the new subjects. The FPÖ fears for good education. They want to keep Latin. The Greens say many rules are not clear. There is not enough information for which classes.
