The parasite makes people sick. It attacks the small gut. This causes very bad diarrhea. The sickness can last over 1 month. Sick people lose much water. We call this de-hydrierung.
People do not infect each other directly. The germ comes from food or water. Often it sticks to fresh fruit or vegetables. Also herbs like basil can be affected. Experts say: Wash fresh food well.
Now there are cases in 31 states. It is very bad in Michigan. There are over 1500 sick people. Usually there are only 50 cases a year. Experts still look for the source.
