Today is a big vote in Iceland. People vote on politics with Europe. It is about new talks with the EU. 13 years ago there were talks. These stopped in 2013. Now the government wants new talks.
The country has two groups. Polls show a close result. Many people want better money. They hope for low prices and low inflation. The euro is a topic too. The own money is often weak.
But there are many opponents. Fishers and farmers say no. They fear for their rights. Fishing is very important for Iceland. It brings half of all sales abroad. Fishers fear strict rules from Brussels.
Another topic is safety. Iceland has no own army. In the past the USA protect the country. Now people have doubts about this. Some hope for help from the EU. Cyber-Angriffe from Russia make people worry.
The voting places close late. The result comes at night. If people vote yes, there are new talks. Later people vote again. Then they decide about joining the EU.
