In the first half of 2026, fewer people seek asylum in Europe. The EU reports about 332000 first requests. This is 17 percent less than in the year before. This is the lowest number since the year 2021.
Most people come from Afghanistan. These are about 39000 people. Then come people from Venezuela and Bangladesh. Fewer people come from Syria and Ukraine. Also from Colombia and Turkey come fewer people.
Most requests go to France. There are 69000 requests. Then come Italy, Spain and Germany. In Austria there are only 4903 requests. In the EU, stricter rules apply since June 2026.
