Austria has a new school subject. It is sign language. Students learn it in high school. The Körner school in Linz starts with it. It is a class of choice. From the year 2030 students take a big test in it. This test is the final exam at a high school.
There is a big problem. Experts are missing. Austria only has about 150 interpreters. That is too little for 10000 deaf people. Teachers for sign language are also rare. Carinthia has no school with this subject yet. There are almost no teachers with the right training.
Experts want more help in Lower Austria. Deaf people need interpreters for daily life. For example for visits to the doctor. The state pays money for this. But children under 15 years get no help. This changes soon.
