The group WWF warns about danger for beavers. In 6 regions, many animals shall die. In total, more than 1000 beavers can die. Lower Austria wants to kill up to 600 beavers. Upper Austria, Carinthia and Styria have such plans too. Salzburg and Vorarlberg plan kills too.
Beavers have strict protection. They are very important for nature. Beavers build dams from wood and dirt. These dams keep water in nature. This helps against big heat and dry time. This makes good places for many plants and animals. WWF calls the plans bad.
The experts worry about young beavers. Young beavers live up to 2 years with parents. If parents die, the kids often die too. WWF says: The rules break law. There must not be general rules for kills. Each case needs single checks. There are better ways like fences or wide banks.
