Andreas Babler steps down as head of the SPÖ party. He also gives up his office as Vice Chancellor. This happens only at the start of the year 2027. Until then, he gets help from Philip Kucher and Eva-Maria Holzleitner. Both lead the party together from January first.
Markus Marterbauer shall become the new Vice Chancellor. He is currently Finance Minister. But Marterbauer is sick right now. He must get healthy first. Andreas Babler still wants to remain a minister in the government. He then keeps caring for topics like housing and sport.
In early 2027, there is a large meeting of the party. People call this Federal Party Day. Members choose a new person for the top position there. Gerhard Zeiler wanted to become head too. But many other politicians in the SPÖ do not want him. The party wants to show more unity again now.
