Austria has new plans for universities. The heads of the universities want to change the Latin rule. In the future, students need no Latin for many subjects.
Students need Latin for about 50 subjects today. This is the Latinum. The heads want to remove this rule for 15 subjects. Medicine and law are part of this. Teachers also need no Latin anymore. Only future Latin teachers still learn it.
Some subjects keep the Latin rule. Philosophy and art history keep it. Theology also keeps Latin. Brigitte Hütter leads the university group. She says that students pass the test very late. This shows that the study works well without Latin. The minister must decide now.
