In the Italian town of Tarvisio, Nicol Delago caused an upset on Saturday. The local star secured her first career victory in the World Cup downhill. Amid partly difficult visibility conditions due to rising fog on the Piste Di Prampero, she relegated her competitors. For the Italian fans, this home victory marked an emotional highlight of the weekend.
Kira Weidle-Winkelmann confirmed her improving form three weeks before the Winter Olympics. The skier from Starnberg finished in second place, trailing by 0.20 seconds. A small mistake in the lower part of the course possibly prevented her from achieving her first World Cup win. Nevertheless, together with her teammate Emma Aicher, who achieved a good fifth place, she underlined the ambitions of the German speed team.
The third podium spot went to the 41-year-old American Lindsey Vonn. With only 0.26 seconds behind the winner, the record holder underlined her competitiveness after her return to the World Cup circuit. Meanwhile, the traditional men's Lauberhorn downhill was the focus in Wengen, Switzerland. Due to wind forecasts, it was decided to hold the race on a shortened course, with local star Marco Odermatt going into the race as the big favorite.
