The intelligence service in North Rhine-Westphalia has classified the AfD's new youth organization, 'Generation Deutschland', as a suspected case of right-wing extremism. As Interior Minister Herbert Reul announced, there are significant indications that the association is, in fact, a continuation of the 'Junge Alternative NRW' (JA). The JA NRW formally dissolved itself in March 2025, after it had already been classified as a suspected case by the State Office for the Protection of the Constitution in 2023.
According to Reul, the new group is essentially the predecessor organization under a new name, thus maintaining personal and ideological continuity. In parallel, the federal AfD party is facing internal tensions. The trigger for this is the military conflicts in Iran. While the party chairs Alice Weidel and Tino Chrupalla called for all warring parties to refrain unconditionally and urged adherence to international law in a joint statement, the foreign policy spokesman for the parliamentary group in the Bundestag, Markus Frohnmaier, set clear accents for the approach of the US administration under Donald Trump. He praised the attacks as precise and targeted against the Iranian regime.
To cover up the internal disagreements in foreign policy, the party has recently focused more on domestic policy issues, such as criticism of rising energy prices.
