There is a test for medical studies in Austria. The test is called Med-AT. 17.000 people want to take the test. But there are only 1.950 places.
Children of academics have better chances. Academics are people with a degree from a university. 58 percent of medical students have such parents.
Many parents are doctors themselves. This helps the children with the test. The government wanted more children from worker families. The goal was 50 percent.
The government did not reach this goal. The test makes it hard to start. People without a place study science. Or they study law.
Only few pass the test right after school. Matura is the final exam at school. Many people try 2 or 3 times.
Students with a place often finish their studies. This is true for all students. More than 8 of 10 get the diploma.
